Freeness – a parameter that is influenced by refiner where energy savings can be generated
Pulp Drainage measurement
Pulp and paper industry uses freeness as a standard measure to represent pulp properties. The freeness is the total volume of water discharged from a side orifice of a specific configuration while the pulp suspension drains freely under gravity.
This parameter indicates the dewatering possibility of the pulp suspension on the pulp and paper machine’s wire.
With the help of refiners, freeness of pulp can be changed and adjusted. Depending on the desired dewatering and process setup this parameter can be measured in the laboratory or online (directly in the process for better and faster control).
There is a close relation and connection to fiber morphology measurement. That is the measurement when more and detailed information of the pulp suspension is needed.
